Happy Birthday Craft Ideas: Customised Birthday Pop Up Card

On the lookout for Happy Birthday Craft ideas? What better way to show your sincerity and care for your loved one with your very own customised birthday pop up card? It’s easy to make and fun to do, and best of all, it’ll definitely surprise your special someone and fill him or her with delight. I’ve had a pleasant experience trying to make my own customised birthday pop up card under the guidance of Artist Celine Chia and suffice to say, she’s definitely knowledgeable in her craft.

With all things said, let’s dive right into the steps to make our own customised birthday pop up card.

Materials Needed:

  • A5 Paper x2
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Black Marker
  • Ruler
  • Glue

These materials are easy to find and readily available.

Artist Celine Chia has kindly drawn out 2 customised birthday pop up card ideas and here is a rough breakdown of the dimensions.

For those who prefer images, please allow me to share a walkthrough of my craft journey (Vertical version).

Firstly, ensure that you have 2 pieces of A5 paper, and trim one till it is 5 inches in diameter.

Next, fold the trimmed paper and draft out the dimensions of the pop up cake with pencil, using the first image as a guide. You may refer to the image below for a clearer depiction of the drawn ‘pop up cake’. Do take note not to cut across the dotted lines in the image below.

While keeping the paper folded, cut across the bold lines for the base layer. After cutting the first layer, push the layer inwards (see image below).

Next, we proceed with cutting the middle layer. The same process applies, push in the middle layer after cutting across the bold lines.

Repeat for the top layer. You should achieve something similar to the image below.

Next, attach this pop up cake to your previous A5 paper using glue. Take care not to glue the ‘pop up’ section!

Feel free to add your own well wishes at the base of the cake and add a candle at the tip!

For the Horizontal version of the customised birthday pop up card, the steps are essentially the same, and here are Artist Celine Chia’s crafts:

The whole process took less than 30 minutes, even for a crafts beginner like me. This birthday pop up card is definitely very doable and easy to make and you can delight your friends and loved ones with one.
